AUXILIARY GENERATORS FOR SUPERYACHTS
It is late evening, at anchor, well after the last tender has come alongside. Below deck, the auxiliary generator is still running, quietly carrying the load that keeps the yacht comfortable: air conditioning through the night, lighting, the galley on standby for an early start, and navigation and communication systems that never switch off. Nobody on board thinks about where that power comes from, which is exactly the point.
An auxiliary generator set is an independent power source that runs alongside the yacht’s main systems, not in reserve for them. A diesel engine drives an alternator that converts mechanical energy into electrical current, and that current feeds the superyacht’s continuous electrical demands. Unlike a standby set that starts only on failure, an auxiliary set runs under varying load for extended periods, and that duty cycle is what determines the configuration: the number of units, their power range, and how the control system shares load as demand shifts through the day.
Custom built
Configuration follows the propulsion architecture: Zenoro works out power output, speed range, control logic, and classification requirements per project. Zenoro designs, builds, and tests every generator set in-house in Ravenstein, the Netherlands. Every set in the range is custom-built, engineered to fit where standard configurations fall short. Zenoro’s engineering department joins the project early, working with the naval architect, shipyard, and the owner’s rep team to define the machinery room layout. With experience built up over the years, we advise on both straightforward and more technically demanding designs.
Our systems
The Zenoro marine generator covers the full auxiliary power range a superyacht needs, from single-unit installations to multi-set configurations on larger builds. The engine, alternator, and control system are matched to the application rather than sold as a fixed package, and sound enclosure, monitoring, and classification options are specified per project. Zenoro fits each generator set with a Xeamos aftertreatment system, choosing DPF-only, SCR-only or a combined DPF/SCR configuration to match the emission legislation and classification requirements that apply. Aftertreatment is engineered into the generator set from the start, not fitted on afterwards.
